.The Oregon Department of Human Services (ODHS) has received approval from the federal government to provide additional food benefits for young children whose families received Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits between September 2021 and May 2022. The federal government has approved emergency allotments every month since March 2020. This gives SNAP recipients additional support during the COVID-19 pandemic. These emergency benefits are a temporary support that Oregon can provide because of the federal COVID-19 public health emergency. Because the federal government approved these emergency benefits for August, Oregon will also be able to issue them in September. However, the emergency benefits are expected to end when the federal public health emergency ends.
In August, approximately 430,000 SNAP households will receive approximately $69 million in extra food benefits in addition to their regular SNAP benefits. Claire Seguin, deputy director of the Oregon Department of Human Services (ODHS), Self-Sufficiency Programs, had the following remark: “We know that many rely on these additional emergency food benefits to get enough healthy food for themselves and their families. We also know that many Oregonians are still struggling to meet their basic needs and we encourage them to contact our partners at 211, the Oregon Food Bank and their local Community Action Agency for support during this difficult time. ”Oregon SNAP households will receive emergency allotments today, August 11th. Emergency allotments will be issued August 31st or September 2nd for households who did not receive benefits in the first monthly issuance. SNAP recipients do not have to take any action to receive these supplemental benefits as they will be issued directly on their EBT cards. Besides Oregon, here is the most current list of states approved for $391 in Summer Pandemic EBT benefits.
As you can see, we have a total of 35 states that were approved, including California. If you’re a resident of California, you can expect to be issued your Summer PEBT benefits on September 3rd for CalSAWS and September 9th for CalWIN. I also noticed a few of you in the comments asking about Alabama. For Alabama, they have opted to issue Summer PEBT benefits on August 31st through an overnight process due to system constraints, in which residents can expect to receive their benefits the following day, on September 1st.
